What Is the TPI Test?

TPI (Trading Personality Indicator) is a self-assessment that maps how you are wired as a trader across four axes and places you into one of 16 trader personality types.

It does not measure your everyday personality. It measures how you decide, take risk, and process emotion while your own money is moving in real time β€” which is a very different situation from filling in a workplace questionnaire.

This article is the explainer. If you would rather just try it, the free Lite test takes about 5 minutes (30 questions, no signup).

The Four Axes

1. Decision Mode: Systematic (S) vs. Intuitive (I)

Do you decide with rules and data, or with experience and market feel? Neither is superior β€” but they need completely different strategies to work.

2. Time Preference: Short-term (T) vs. Long-term (L)

Do you want fast feedback in minutes to days, or are you comfortable letting a thesis develop over weeks to years? Trade against this axis and you pay psychological rent in the form of boredom or anxiety.

3. Risk Attitude: Aggressive (A) vs. Conservative (C)

How much volatility will you accept for return β€” and, just as important, do you actually understand risk (for example, the asymmetry of compounding after a drawdown)?

4. Emotion Control: Rational (R) vs. Emotional (E)

Can you sleep with an open position? Can you make a clean decision 90 seconds after a stop-out? Being E-type is not a flaw β€” but ignoring this axis is how most traders exit the market.

How the 16 Types Are Built

Your result on each axis contributes one letter to a four-letter code. STAR, for example, means Systematic x Short-term x Aggressive x Rational β€” a data-driven systematic trader.

SeriesCombinationExample types
STSystematic x Short-termSTAR (The Faceless), STCR (The Clockmaker)
SLSystematic x Long-termSLAR (The Wallfacer), SLCR (The Ascetic)
ITIntuitive x Short-termITAR (The Witcher), ITAE (The Asura)
ILIntuitive x Long-termILAR (The Grandmaster), ILCE (The Free Spirit)
Each type has distinct strengths, blind spots, and characteristic traps. All 16 are documented on the types overview page.

How Is This Different from MBTI?

MBTI measures everyday preferences. A person who is a calm "Thinking" type in daily life can be completely hijacked by fear the moment their account is down 20%. TPI is designed from the ground up around behavior when money is at stake. See the full comparison in TPI vs. MBTI.

How to Take It (Free)

1. Lite (free, 30 questions, ~5 min) β€” determines your four axes and type. No signup. Start from the home page. 2. Standard (free, 50 questions) β€” adds a maturity (realm) assessment on top of the four axes. 3. Results page β€” your type, strengths, blind spots, and the traps your type tends to fall into.

An Honest Note

TPI is a descriptive self-reflection tool β€” not a clinically validated instrument, not financial advice, and not a predictor of returns. Use the result as a mirror, not a verdict, and always compare it with your actual trading records.
